Ladies and gentlemen,
It gives me great pleasure to be here today, as we announce some of our upcoming events to be held right here, at one of the best stadiums in Asia.
I had the privilege of walking through the new National Stadium earlier and I am greatly impressed with what I have seen: a world-class standard pitch, dressing rooms, state-of-the-art medical facilities, among others. I am confident with one of the best stadiums in Asia, sports including football, will take a leap forward hosting our competitions here.
All of us at the Football Association of Singapore are looking forward for our teams to play in front of 55,000 fans at the new National Stadium when it is completed. It will be an incredible level of support for our teams and players.
We will continue to work towards the first game at the National Stadium with excitement and anticipation of the atmosphere at what is, undoubtedly, one of great stadiums around the world.
On this note, I would like to announce that our Singapore National Team will be hosting our neighbours Malaysia in the opening match on 8 August 2014. We believe this match will serve as an excellent prelude to our National Day celebrations. Our players are looking forward to this match with much excitement. We want to urge all our fans to come out in force to support our team in one of football’s most intense rivalries.
On top of such an exciting first match, we are also looking forward to defend our AFF Suzuki Cup title on home soil when it comes around in December. We are proud to be able to showcase the all-new Sports Hub to the rest in South East Asia in this region’s most prestigious international football tournament.
As co-host, we will be organising group games to be played here at the new National Stadium, and if we progress past the group stages, we can also look forward to semi-finals and the final to be held here.
We are the record 4-time AFF Cup winners and the defending champions. It will be extra special if we can defend our title here at our new National Stadium, in front of our own fans.
To add on, the next edition of the SEA Games will be held at the Sports Hub next June, and it will be a spectacle if we are to emulate the Singapore Spirit – as Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong mentioned, “we stick together in difficulty and rejoice when Team Singapore makes history”.
We are in the midst of finalising details of other upcoming matches with our partners, including events promoters, and we will make the necessary announcements in due course.
From the footballing and community perspectives, we would want to play as many international and friendly matches as possible at the new 55,000-seater venue, both on FIFA and non-FIFA dates, whenever possible and practical.
We look forward to working closely with our partners, including SPHL and events promoters, to organise more football matches for our fans.
We have also set ourselves a target to attain the gold medal in the next SEA Games football tournament, which will also be held here, and we look forward to the nation rallying behind our cause. I also wish to emphasize that the 2015 SEA Games will present an opportunity for Singaporeans from all walks of life to come together to celebrate not just sports but also our journey as a nation for the last 50 years.
Let us all, including our fans, media and stakeholders, re-ignite the Kallang Roar when we play our first game at the new National Stadium.
Thank you and have a good afternoon ahead.
