UEFA TECHNICAL EXPERT RETURNS FOR SECOND PHASE OF AFC WOMEN’S ASSISTANCE PROGRAMME

SINGAPORE, 23 NOVEMBER 2016: The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) is pleased to announce that UEFA Technical Expert Ms Hesterine de Reus has returned for the second of three consultations under the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Women’s Assistance Programme (WAP), which began on 15 November and will run till 29 November 2016.

Julie Teo, General Manager of Grassroots and Women’s Football, expressed delight at having Ms de Reus back in Singapore.

“It is indeed an honour to have Hesterine here in Singapore once again to share her expertise with our women’s football staff and coaches. She helped them tremendously in her previous stint in Singapore; I am sure they will be eager to not only show her what they have achieved in the past few months, but also have more in-depth discussions and get her feedback as we continue to grow women’s football in Singapore,” said Ms Teo.

In an effort to increase the level of technical expertise in women’s football, Singapore applied for the AFC WAP programme and was successfully selected as one of the Member Associations to host the first visit by an AFC delegation in August 2013. A preliminary study was then carried out on women’s football in the country to assess how the sport was progressing, both at the elite and recreational levels.

Three phases of the technical expert’s attachment to Singapore were arranged to bolster FAS’s progress by guiding the Association towards achieving its targets for its Women’s National Teams.

The first phase from 17 June-23 July 2016 saw Ms de Reus mentoring and guiding FAS’s female coaches and staff. She had taught the coaches advanced coaching methods and provided technical and tactical assistance in the coaches’ preparation of the various National Teams for competitions.

Head Coach of the National Women’s A Team and AFC ‘A’ Certificate holder, Yeong Sheau Shyan, shared: “She guided us by giving us clarity and direction to improve as a National Team set-up, emphasising on the teamwork and coordination between the administrative, technical and support staff.  She also gave us valuable tips on coaching and how our sessions should be planned meticulously down to the finest details. That helped to set expectations for us to uphold and brought more quality to our training sessions.”

Mirroring Ms Yeong’s sentiments, Women’s ‘A’ National Team Captain Noor Kusumawati Bte Mohammad Rosman said: “I could see that the team stayed focused and gave their best during training sessions. I am truly grateful for the wealth of knowledge and experience she shared with the team.”
