SINGAPORE TO TAKE ON ARGENTINA AT NATIONAL STADIUM TO MARK 125-YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Argentinian stars Messi, Agüero and Di María slated to make debut appearances in the Lion City for historical fixture

SINGAPORE, 19 April 2017 – The Singapore Lions will take on the world number two ranked team, Argentina, in a historic match at the National Stadium on Tuesday, 13th June 2017.

The fixture has been scheduled to mark the Football Association of Singapore’s (FAS) 125-year anniversary, and will see Argentina field a full strength team, set to include their talismanic forward Lionel Messi and star players such as Sergio Agüero, Gonzalo Higuaín and Ángel Di María, in what is being billed the ‘match of the year’.

Organised by FAS and international sport and entertainment promoter UNICESS, the match is part of four-nation tour that will see Argentina play Brazil in Melbourne, Australia on Friday 9th June 2017, with the Socceroos then taking on Brazil in Melbourne on 13 June 2017, the same night as the Singapore fixture.

Speaking about the national team’s chances against such highly rated opposition, National Coach, V. Sundram Moorthy said:

“Argentina are one of the top international teams and have in their squad many world-class players such as Barcelona forward Lionel Messi, Paris Saint-Germain winger Ángel Di María and Manchester City striker Sergio Agüero. FAS has worked very hard to finalise the match, which will benefit our players and coaches in terms of invaluable exposure as well as enhance the level of sporting entertainment for fans in Singapore. I am looking forward to leading my country out against such the two-time FIFA World Cup champions, and we hope that Singaporeans will come out in force to cheer us on. A packed stadium on 13 June will make a huge difference and give our players the boost they need against a team with so many talented world-class players.”

Said National Team captain Shahril Ishak of the upcoming fixture:

“I was very surprised when I learnt that we will be taking on the likes of Messi and Aguero during the next FIFA international window. While our Lions had played against top international teams at the National Stadium during the past 15 years or so, there is no doubt that Argentina will be the strongest, most star-studded opponents for us. As players, it is always our desire to play against the best opponents possible and we are very thankful to the FAS for the relentless hard work and efforts in bringing Argentina to Singapore.”

Lions vice-captain Hariss Harun is looking forward to the match, saying:

“Argentina is definitely one of the best teams in the world, and I personally cannot wait to test myself against the likes of Angel Di Maria and Sergio Aguero. Against teams like this, we will definitely need the 12th man behind us – so we really hope that 55,000 fans will pack the National Stadium on 13 June to cheer us on. This is definitely a very exciting match that we are all looking forward to – it is great for not just us as footballers, but also for the fans, that FAS has managed to pull it off. It is a truly fitting fixture to celebrate the 125th anniversary.”

Speaking about the historic occasion, Manu Sawhney, CEO of the Singapore Sports Hub, said:

“We are delighted to host two-time World Cup and 14-time Copa America champions, Argentina, in a friendly match with Singapore Lions at the National Stadium in June. This is a fantastic addition to the vibrant season of football at the Singapore Sports Hub, and lends to the festivities in celebration of the 125th year of the Football Association of Singapore. As a staunch supporter of local football, we have worked hard with our partners to present the football community in Singapore and the region, an opportunity to watch the beautiful game played by one of the top teams and some of the best players in the world today.”

Aiden Kwangik Moon, CEO & Founder of match promoter UNICESS added:

"We are delighted to co-promote this match between Singapore and Argentina to commemorate the 125th anniversary of FAS. The game will not only appeal to fans in Singapore but will attract football fans from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and other nearby countries and will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to see this generation of Argentinian players compete in Singapore. We look forward to welcoming football fans and families alike as they witness these world-class players in action and create some unforgettable memories.”
