Singapore Malayalee Association Celebrates Centenary with Latest Edition of Long-Running Tournament

SINGAPORE, 2 OCTOBER 2017: Over the weekend, the Singapore Malayalee Association (SMA) organised a two-day 11-a-side football tournament, the latest edition of one of the longest-running football tournaments in Singapore. Football Association of Singapore (FAS) Council Member and Chairman of the FAS Medical Committee Dr Dinesh Nair was on hand to present the prizes at the end of the tournament, which Parco FC won by beating Snipers FC 2-1 in a thrilling final.

The tournament has been organised for over 50 years, and it was also a particularly special occasion for the SMA as Singapore’s oldest Indian organisation celebrates its centenary year this year.

Before the prize presentation, Dr Nair – who is of Malayalee descent himself – delivered a short speech, stating that “there is no better way to bring our people together than through sport, and no better sport to bring people together than football”. He also called on the Malayalee community to continue their enthusiasm for the sport up, and for more – especially youths – to increase their involvement, to hopefully develop football stars from the community.
