Fun-Filled Morning for More Than 250 Kids at the Under-10 Football Fiesta

It was the one-week semester break for primary schools but some 250 children from 18 schools gathered at Jalan Besar Stadium early this morning to participate in the Singapore Primary School Sports Council (SPSSC) and Football Association of Singapore (FAS) Under-10 Football Fiesta – the second year the event was held since it changed to focus on learning and fun games rather than competition.

Keeping in line with FAS grassroots philosophy, the main aim of the non-competitive Fiesta was to provide opportunities for all to enjoy football. Participants took part in fun drills and small-sided games conducted by FAS grassroots coaches.

Yio Chu Kang Primary School (YCKPS) teacher Mr Liu Hua Qing said: “I think that the children really enjoyed themselves today. It was a good experience for them through fun-filled games, interaction with children from other schools, and building up rapport among themselves. It’s good that FAS organised this fiesta for the younger children as it gives them the opportunity to have some tournament experience. They get to play against children from other schools and build their foundation in football.”

Mr Lim Yi, whose son Lim Gui Bin of YCKPS participated in the Fiesta, affirmed: “It is the March school holidays, so I thought it would be good for my child to have some fun. Most importantly, he gets to bond with other classmates and hang out with kids from other schools.”

Mr Lim added: “I think that the Fiesta is a good idea as my child gets to play the game he loves. I feel that he has definitely learnt something from today’s Fiesta.”

Echoing similar views, other parents also expressed their appreciation to FAS and SPSSC for organising the fiesta. Mdm Nurlinda bte Zulkifli, the mother of Mohammad Hyder from Elias Park Primary School, commented: “I think the Fiesta is very useful for Hyder and the kids. It has not only helped the kids with drills so that they can grow as football players, but also gives them the chance to mingle with kids from other schools as they play.”

Mr Jasni Mahmood Jasmin, Ministry of Education North Zone Football Convener said: “The Fiesta was very good – it was a non-competitive environment and allowed mass participation of students, so the children were able to enjoy themselves and hone their skills at the same time. Most of them have taken up football as their co-curricular activity, but some of them are not in their school teams. This Fiesta is one of the platforms for those unable to represent their schools to take part in matches.”

Following 2 hours of fun, medals of participation were presented to all participants by FAS Technical Director Michel Sablon, National Coach V. Sundram Moorthy, and FAS grassroots coaches.
